Historic Name CUPCO CHURCH
Description of Significance THE CUPCO CHURCH, BUILT IN 1889, IS ONE OF SOUTHEAST OKLAHOMAS OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY FUNCTIONING CHURCHES. THIS SINGLE-STORY RECTANGULAR BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED BY METHODIST MISSIONARIES, SENT TO EVANGELIZE THE CHOCTAWS IN THE AREA. THE CHOCTAW NATION MAINTAINED THE CHURCH FOR TRIBAL MEMBERS UNTIL 1914, AT WHICH TIME THE CHURCH WAS SOLD. A MAJORITY OF THE PRESENT CONGREGANTS ARE CHOCTAW. LISTED IN NATIONAL REGISTER 11/6/1980.
